What are Consultation skills champions?

Over 60,000 pharmacy professionals in England in all sectors of practice and across all experiences, roles and competencies need to know about this vital learning and development programme in consultation skills. That’s a big task, so we need more than just this website and some tweets!

That is why we are creating a movement of consultation skills champions who will:

  • champion the vision of consultation skills
  • promote the approach, learning resources, resources and tools available to help improve consultation skills
  • offer peer review to close colleagues, using the tools on this website

Some may also offer training and learning support, if they are suitably trained.

Consultation skills champions can work in any area of practice and don’t have to be experts in consultation skills. It’s their enthusiasm and commitment to improve and help others that is needed.

We hope a consultation skills champion will:
  • be an early adopter of the consultation skills practice standards and the approach promoted by this learning and development programme
  • act as a role model for colleagues and other pharmacy professionals
  • promote the vision of why pharmacy professionals need to focus on developing effective consultation skills
  • start to demonstrate the skills and behaviours outlined in the practice standards for consultation skills when working with patients and the public.
At this stage, there is no register of champions, as it is a voluntary arrangement for enthusiastic people, so it would not be fair for us to share their names. Ideally, champions in your area, workplace, hospital, company, organisation or team will want to share with you their enthusiasm and passion to help pharmacy professionals with their consultation skills. This is just the start, once the network of champions is established, we will see how we can help them to spread the word.
They don’t have to be, but if they are then that’s great. We are keen to extend expertise in the pharmacy profession, and we hope this website will put you in a great place to start promoting the Consultation skills for pharmacy practice learning and development programme.
